Big Ben is becoming London’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa – now having a slant that is visible to the naked eye. Research shows that the Clock Tower is tilting at an angle of 0.26 degrees in a north-westerly direction, which means the top of the tower is nearly one-and-a-half feet from vertical.
If the tower continues to lean in its current direction, it could crash on to MPs’ offices in Portcullis House. However, there is no real need to panic as at its current rate Big Ben would take about 4,000 years to match the four-degree angle of the Italian tower and even longer to topple over.
The cause of the sinking is believed to be due to decades of underground building work around the Houses of Parliament since the tower was completed in 1858, including an underground car park in the 1970s and the 1990s Jubilee Line extension.
John Burland, emeritus professor and senior research investigator from Imperial College London, said: “The tilt is now just about visible. You can see it if you stand on Parliament Square and look east, towards the river. I have heard tourists there taking photographs saying ‘I don’t think it is quite vertical’ – and they are quite right.”
