Flintoff v Lee: showdown at the Oval?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

With the final Ashes test coming up this week, we thought we might have a look at the build-up to the match. So far, the big stories surround the two talismanic test figures of Andrew Flintoff and Brett Lee, and whether injury will allow them to do battle again in the final test at the Oval. England’s Flintoff and Australia’s Lee made up the iconic image of the 2005 Ashes series, with Flintoff providing a consoling hug in the middle of the wicket. Flintoff missed the last test at Headingly while Lee has yet to play in the series so far.

Both bowlers are eager about playing; Flintoff, barring any late injuries, should play, however Lee will have to work hard to convince selectors that he will still be dangerous despite lacking practice or any real playing time. Already Tim Nielson has highlighted his ability to reverse swing as an asset, which is enough to seriously consider him for the test team. Lee took 3 wickets against the England Lions at Canterbury on Sunday in their last warm-up game.

Comment has also circulated about the pitch, in particular over the reputation of the Oval being a batsman’s paradise, and therefore not one to encourage win or lose results; so, in a series where, despite being 1-1, the Australians will regain the Ashes if the series remains a tie, this has obviously attracted a lot of opinion.

The Oval groundstaff have assured that they have not received any requests by the ECB to produce a ‘results pitch’ and actually point out that seven of the past ten tests have ended in a win, five in favour of England.

England to struggle without talismanic Flintoff or solid Prior for the fourth test at Headingly this morning

Friday, August 7th, 2009

England’s Ashes preparation for the crucial 4th test today have been thrown into disarray following two big names being ruled out of the side after short notice.

Matthew Prior suffered a back spasm this morning and is currently under examination, and it’s unclear whether he will be able to play at Headingly. Selectors may well have to make a decision about Prior’s keeping position, whether they call up a specialist replacement or trust Paul Collingwood, who has turned a few tricks in the wicket keeping position in the past. If England take to the field this morning Collingwood could play as substitute keeper until a specialist arrive; the most likely candidates seem to be Time Ambrose or James Foster. The toss should be delayed by 10 minutes, following England’s requests.

With Freddie Flintoff’s omission, England selectors have already been given a difficult decision. On one side they bolster the side’s bowling attack, going for the likes of Stephen Harmison, comparable in tenacity with Flintoff; or on the other hand they could bolster the batting order with Jonathan Trott, giving him his Ashes debut. Such is the problem of replacing an all-rounder like Flintoff, however questions have been levelled at Stuart Broad’s ability to hold his place in a four-man bowling attack.

Flintoff had heavy strapping on his knee during practice where he spent 40 minutes bowling tentatively. The final decision to rule him out of the match was taken by Strauss. Strauss’s  headache wasn’t much helped by a fire alarm, which went off in the small hours this morning at the England Hotel; players were forced to wait in a torrential downpour for 20 minutes.

Soggy start bogs down England in the third Ashes test

Friday, July 31st, 2009

A little off subject but let’s look at how the third Ashes test has gone so far. After eking out a ‘morally victorious’ draw in Cardiff for the first test and securing a triumphant win at Lords for the second, the first win there for England against Australia since 1934, England are leading the series 1-0 and are in a great position going into the third test at Edgbaston. The crucial test got off to a wet start yesterday when rain prevented play until 4:30pm, when the captains eventually tossed up.

Play started with only 30 overs left in the day. England got off to a disappointing start as their seamers struggled to get back the fire they had bowled in Lords in the last confrontation. Flintoff, despite bowling fast, reaching 94 mph at times, kept finding himself putting balls too short. Anderson also looked threatening at times but again an inconsistent radar meant putting too much too wide, and not troubling the Australian batsmen who happily obliged and punished them.

The Australians capitalised on the inconsistent bowling; Shane Watson came in to replace Phillip Hughes (who slipped the replacement before the game via Twitter to the anger of the Australian hierarchy), and hit a fine unbeaten 62. Simon Katich was the first to fall after off-spinner Graeme Swann got one to straighten a little and beat the left-hander’s attempted pull in Swann’s first over, Katich went with a swift 46. Ponting got off the mark with a steady drive through the covers for four, which brought up the Australian 100, settling down to see the match into the night without drama.
