Bloopers reel from the Aussie football league

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Okay, it’s the end of the season and time to review some of the lighter moments from around the world. After doing a lot of research we came across this little beauty of a video from the land down under! Some truly shocking defending, striking, keeping, and reefing will have you in stitches!

The Telegraph is actually quite sceptical of  the standard in the A-league and describes it as “where League One players retire to, a place where the biggest star is Michael Bridges, and a league renown for hilarious ineptitude. Never is this better demonstrated than in the traditional end-of-year bloopers reel, which features goalkeeping errors that would make Massimo Taibi weep, glorious misses from single-figure-yard distances to shame Jason Lee, and an awful lot of players shooting directly at their own team-mates. Treasure it.” Blimey – someone there is not a fan!

McFounding Father

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

An astounding and somewhat bizarre story appeared on the Metro website recently as a chicken nugget resembling George Washington was sold on eBay for £5,000!

A bidding frenzy unfolded within an hour of the image of the nugget, superimposed in front of an American flag and fireworks, being uploaded onto the auction site.

We at 247Moneybox.com were sceptical and in typically Britsh fashion felt it quite resembled Charles Darwin from a different angle. But having looked at all the images and even a YouTube video, which we’d urge you to check for yourself, it must be said that there is a certain likeness to the first President of the United States.

And fortunately for one c-lucky patriot, eBay overturned its initial decision to ban the sale of the item on the premise that it violated regulations on expired food.

What next, a chicken wing resembling Justin Bieber? Only in America, we guess.

Brits playing FTSE

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Money, money, money is no longer funny, according to an article on the thisismoney.co.uk website. The search engine Yahoo! has said that the FTSE, which records the London Stock Exchange share prices, has drawn more internet searches in 2011 than any other subject.

From the heights of 7,000 points, the FTSE 100 now hovers around the 5,000 mark and it is clear that this trend reflects consumer mood. Echoing this, funnily enough, the second most searched subject is The National Lottery, with people turning their attention to the hope of quick financial gain.

With the third being the Job Centre, it becomes apparent that personal finance really is the big theme of  the past year - but it is surprising that Katie Price (a.k.a. Jordan) sits at number four on the list.

And after that, the search is dominated by celebrities, which is to be expected what with the Royal Wedding, the death of Amy Winehouse, and other famous people in the public eye last year.

We say roll on the good times for 2012!

Internet dating lies

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

For those internet daters out there, we have found a small survey which details the top lies told by men and women. We are not fans of liars (even little white ones), and so in an effort to alert people to these porkies pulling the wool over people’s eyes, we thought we would give the top three lies told by men and women on their dating sites.

Men:

1) Job (saying it is better than it is) - so if his profile states that he is Warren Buffet’s ‘right hand man’, odds are that he’s lying.

2) Height (taller) - now this is a must if he’s taking you to a theme park for a date: you need to make sure that he’ll be able to get on all of the rides!!

3) Weight (losing or gaining a few pounds) - but remember muscle weighs more than fat.

Women:

1) Weight (losing a few pounds) - no matter what, you shouldn’t ask!!

2) Age (losing a few years) - always have a sneak peek at the birth certificate/drivers licence.

3) Physique (toned) - it seems that ‘toned’ is a buzzword that spans quite a large range of somatotypes.

So there we have it, the top three lies told by men and women … you have been warned! Happy internet dating everybody!!

A plank too far

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

As a new internet craze known as ‘planking’ begins to spread through a number of social networks, one online ‘plankster’ has taken it one step too far, as reported by BBC Magazine online. A 20 year old man in Australia was attempting to lie down across a balcony railing while his friend took a photo, but he lost his balance and fell to his death.

The concept of planking is simple: people attempt to find the strangest public places to lie face down, with their hands by their side and their toes pointing to the ground, while a friend takes a photo that is uploaded to various social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

Two competing groups – one in Somerset in 2000 that called it the “lying down game” and another in Australia three years ago – claim to have invented the craze, and have rival online groups with an astonishing number of followers (over 100,000 each!).

Having gone totally viral, to the point that Australian rugby league player David ‘Wolfman’ Williams often celebrates scoring a try by planking, the death of this man has alerted police and MPs worldwide and highlights the extreme measures that some individuals will go to in order to create the perfect comical shot.

But Neil Lanxon, the editor of future technology news site Wired.co.uk, suggests the idea is to lie down in positions where it is ridiculous, such as dance floors or public bins (as it started), and not dangerous positions. And with viral phenomena, the term ‘all publicity is good publicity’ could never be more accurate, with Lanxon claiming that this accidental death will only fuel the spread of interest in this craze.

Fortunately, it hasn’t yet hit the 247Moneybox.com offices … to our knowledge …

Facebook places?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

New to the apps market is ’Facebook places‘, similar to the GroupOn business model.

Some say ‘Facebook places’ has not proved to be the success they hoped for. It works by allowing users to ‘check-in’ and thus notify everyone that they are in a certain place. Other than shoving it down friends’ throats that you are currently at the Emirates or the O2 arena and therefore have a better social life than them, the app doesn’t provide much.

However, on the flip side the app will now give people the chance to check-in and find out the best deals in their vicinity. For instance, the say you’ve arrived at St. Pancras International and are hungry. Well, by checking-in you can immediately be brought up to speed with the latest special offers at the nearby shops, cafés and restaurants.

Similar concepts are being pioneered in the US, and are set to be available to smartphone users like the iPhone, Blackberry and Android. It is a good idea, since websites which offer the chance to get coupons and discounts (such as GroupOn) have become increasingly popular. In fact Google recently offered around £6bn to take over GroupOn, before it decided to launch something similar to the Facebook app.

Facebook founder is ‘Time’ Person of the Year

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Beating Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, into second place, Mark Zuckerberg scooped the prestigious recognition of Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. The aim of the title is to recognise the person who has “for better or for worse… done the most to influence the events of the year”.

A surprise choice perhaps, however ’ Time’ editor Richard Stengel said that the choice for this year’s award shows how much the way we communicate has changed. “The way we connect with one another and with the institutions in our lives is evolving,” he said. ”More than anyone else on the world stage, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is at the centre of these changes.”

facebook

Here at 247Moneybox.com we don’t find it such a surprising choice. We think that Zuckerberg’s success is down to his view of the internet as a way of connecting people as opposed to others who see the internet just as a network of computers.

However, being the portal to the internet is a very powerful position to start thinking about the monetising potential, and, who knows, maybe we are seeing a true rival to Google.

Go-ahead for two-tiered Internet raises eyebrows: 247Moneybox.com takes a closer look

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Suggestions this week on the possibility of a two-tiered Internet in the future has certainly stirred things up. The remarks quickly became a trending topic on Twitter (as well as a discussion point here at 247Moneybox.com) as web users digested what it could mean for them.

The UK government looks likely to approve Ofcom plans to permit ISPs to abandon net neutrality and prioritise some kinds of Internet traffic. Ofcom recently completed a consultation on net neutrality, concluding that there could be a real economic benefit for a two-sided market to emerge, especially in areas such as internet TV.

The new communications minister Ed Vaizey agrees, preferring to rely on market forces rather than regulation. His stance will certainly be welcomed by leading ISPs. Both BT and Talk Talk said recently that they would be prepared to prioritise traffic from certain content providers for a fee.

However, consumer campaigners are opposed to any change which will threaten choice. “It will undermine the competitive nature of the Internet, and provide opportunities for market abuse,” said Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group.

Not as fast as 247Moneybox.com! Supercar taxis - are we in Monaco?!

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

If you’ve been driving around London this morning, you may have seen a few Ferraris masquerading as taxis and wondered why these cabbies are risking a supercar in Piccadilly Circus rush hour … and, come to think of it, are London cab fares high enough to fund these elaborate rickshaws?!

No Virgin Media unleashed a new marketing campaign promoting their ’super-fast’ 100Mb broadband service. Read more about it and see some pictures here.

A great idea, we feel, considering anyone lucky enough to flag down a Porsche 997 Turbo Gen 1, Ferrari 430 F1 Coupe or Aston Martin DBS as it zooms past will be entitled to a luxury journey absolutely free.

Don’t get too used to it though the service is only available between 10am and 4pm on Thurday 28th of October (today!), and by the time you read this the chance may have gone as quickly as it came.
