Movember 2011

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 million people. The concept is simple: at the beginning of November, cleanshaven men across the world register with Movember and then spend the rest of the month growing a moustache of any shape or size. Movember raised £48.5m globally during the 2010 campaign, an increase of £20.9m over the prior year.

The campaign funds catalytic research and clinical trials infrastructure that leads to significantly improved diagnosis and prognostic tests and treatments to reduce the burden of prostate and testicular cancer.

25k for Justin Bieber’s locks? Hair-raising, quite literally!

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Suffering from Bieber Fever? Well, keep your hair on for this story reported by the BBC.

Appearing on the Ellen Degeneres Show, the 17-year-old teenage heartthrob (or in this case, object of obsession) handed her a lock of his hair to be auctioned off on eBay for an animal welfare charity, after changing his hairstyle.

And with our endorsement of Compassion in World Farming, we’d agree that it’s a worthy cause.

So how much would you pay? Based on how much it actually sold for, a better question would probably be ‘how much could you afford?’

A total of 98 bids led to a final sale price of $40,668 (£25,024). Yes, the price of a new 4×4, I hear you say!

Looks like he won’t be short of income for the next 40 years or so, then. Wonder if the www.247Moneybox.com pig would consider a quick haircut!

Training for 5k Santa run

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

With four days to go to the 247Moneybox.com 5k Santa run, our legs have been going great guns, with training up to four times a week. If you’re like me, you want to be a better, stronger, healthier, and, most of all, FASTER runner.

However, after work after family commitments, daily errands, and keeping up with piles of washing how are we supposed to fit in enough good workouts to reach our goal (becoming the next Haile Gebrselassie obviously)? It’s one of the greatest challenges we part-time runners face. Thankfully, due to flexible working hours, staff at 247Moneybox.com have had four weeks of preparation to train for our 5K run (plenty of time).

Take a look at our training log: Week 1 Brisk 5-minute warm-up walk;  then a 15-minute walk followed by a 10-minute sprint, for a total of 30 minutes. Week 2 Brisk 5-minute warm-up walk; then 15 minutes of jogging and 20 minutes of walking, totalling 40 minutes. Week 3 Brisk 5-minute warm-up uphill walk; then a 30-minute jog and a 15-minute walk, for a total of 50 minutes. Week 4 Brisk 5-minute walk; then a 1-hour jog followed by a 10-minute warm-down walk, for a total of 1 hour 15 minutes.

So this gruelling lead-up to the run has put us in a great position to do full justice to ourselves and the 247Moneybox.com team. We’ve been losing pounds as quickly as we have been loaning them out, and now is the time, as we enter the home straight, to really upgrade our training to the “express service”!
